The Non-Lucrative Visa is a type of Spanish residency visa designed for non-EU citizens who want to live in Spain without working.  It’s perfect for retirees, pre-retirees, or anyone with passive income (like pensions, savings, or rental income).

 

This visa allows you to reside in Spain for more than 90 days — far beyond the standard tourist limit — without engaging in any professional or commercial activity.

To qualify, you will need to show:

✅ Sufficient financial means - to support yourself and any dependents

✅ Private Spanish health insurance - full coverage with no co-payments

✅ Medical certificates

✅ A clean criminal record 

✅ Proof of accommodation - e.g. a rental agreement or property deed

✅ Fully translated documents by authorised Spanish translators

✅ Legally approved documentation

✅ Marriage or civil partnerships certificates ( married couples )

✅ Proof of co-habitation ( unmarried couples )

How Long Does It Last ?

• 1 year (initial approval)

• Renewable for 2 years, then another 2 years

• After 5 years, you can apply for long-term residency
   

Travel & Stay Rules ?

The NLV allows travel within the Schengen Zone (most of Europe).

 

To maintain your visa?

• You must spend 183+ days per year in Spain

• You cannot be employed in Spain or start a business in Spain (the latter requires a change to a business visa whch can be applied for in Spain whilst holding an NLV)
